Hon. Gen. Secretary's Message

The Mahadayi Water Dispute Tribunal’s Interim Order has come in as a rude shock to all of us, particularly our entrepreneurial brothers and sisters in North Karnataka.

The Interim Order has rejected the Karnataka’s plea to allow diversion of 7.65 tmc ft of water into the Malaprabha River. This will result in depriving the drinking water needs of people in Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad, Gadag, Bagalkot and Uttara Kannada Districts.

In our press release, we have urged the intervention of our Hon’ble Prime Minister and also appealed to our Chief Minister to take all steps necessary to impress upon the Centre and the State of Goa for an amicable settlement.

Our Member-units too have expressed their resentment about the spate of strikes and bundhs. While there can be a legitimate issue to resort to a bundh on occasion, the State Government has to also consider how it can mitigate the losses in terms of productivity, manhours lost, tax revenues, etc.

The issue is quite serious enough. If we have eyes to see, it is like the elephant in the room! For instance, some estimates show that the total loss for Karnataka as a whole in the last week of July on account of multiple strikes and bandhs was around Rs 8,000-9,000 crore!

We are also happy with the State Government’s sustained efforts to improve the ease of doing business, like for example the much appreciated Startup Cell, launched recently by Sri Priyank Kharge, Hon’ble Minister for IT & BT. However, as our President has stressed, the incentives made available under the Startup Policy should also be extended to manufacturing SMEs.

At KASSIA, we have been working together as a team to increase and improve our gamut of services to our Members. In the coming days, our website will have a much improved look and offer a bouquet of solutions to our Members.

We have also been interacting with our respective Panel Chairmen and Members to ensure that every step is taken keeping in mind the implementation of our Agenda.

Please keep us engaged with your suggestions and issues to be taken up for redressal.

With warm regards,
Sri T.S.Umashankar
